"A Story About Daddy" by Louise

A story about Roy William Phillips that was widely told as truth:

Daddy had the reputation of being very strong, though he wasn't a big man physically. And he always put everything he had into what he was doing and made things work -- partly because of sheer determination. When he was a young man, he once had an old mule that was more than the usual "stubborn" as mules go. Daddy got real mad and popped him in the forehead with his fist ... and knocked him out! Or at least it addled the mule enough that he fell to the ground for a short time!

  1. As a PS to Daddy's toughness, he was also an accomplished carpenter. He had the reputation of being the best foundation block layer in the area. He worked fast, too, like he was on contract work, but no amount of prompting would get him to charge his fee any way but by the hour.

He was different from other carpenters in another way, too. He couldn't stand to wear work gloves, so he would simply wear off the ends of his finger tipss the first day on a block-laying job. He would come home with them all bloody, then bandage them up with adhesive tape, and go back to work the next day.

Yes, Daddy was "tough" -- but he had a heart of pure gold. He'd let his only little girl tag along when he went fishing, even though she made noise and scared the fish away, and only went along to get a Pepsi Cola and a pack of nabs.
